Be cool. use the 70/20/10 rule.
70%: Educate & entertain
Do you love selling? Maybe you do, and that’s awesome, but I don’t, and if I’m honest, it’s probably because I don’t know how to do it very well. But that’s beside the point, because with the 70/20/10 rule, 70% of your feed should be used to educate and entertain your audience. I don’t exactly mean just (re)posting memes, unless that works for you, (and for some people, it does!) but actually dig deep into your trove of genius and pull out some nuggets for the good people of the internet. They follow you for your expertise and your personality (hopefully) so let ‘em have it!
Pro Tip: Social media is best when it’s, well, social. So share the love, brag on your friends, call out cool community members, other businesses, events you’ll be attending, and use your platform to create more community. Surely no one could object to that, and you may even get some shares and engagement out of the deal.
20%: You, your business, values, team, culture.
This part is where we get to indulge that little narcissistic part of ourselves that we all have. Just kidding, but truly, it is important to share aspects of yourself and let your audience in on who you are individually, as a team, and as a brand or company. There’s that adage that people do business with people they “know, like, and trust.” It’s fairly self evident that in order to get to “like and trust” you, people have to get to know you… so let them in on who you really are, and you’re setting yourself up for a greater opportunity to do some cool work together.
10%: Sell products & services. Give a strong CTA!
Speaking of working together, this part is where you freakin’ sell ‘em. Pitch your products and services, why you’re the best, why you’re different, why they should choose you, and then tell them to (nicely) with a call to action. There are many different ways to get here, some that feel less “salesy” than others. Want to riff on some ideas as to how you can get to that natural “sell” in your video content? Book me for a call or a coffee and let’s toss some ideas around.
